Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *stalas, from Proto-Indo-European *stoh₂los, from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Equivalent to *stojati (“to stand”) + *-lo. Cognate with Lithuanian stãlas, Old Prussian stalis and Gothic 𐍃𐍄𐍉𐌻𐍃 (stōls).
