Etymology

From earlier *tę̑gъkъ, *tęgъka̍, *tę̑gъko (definite *tęgъkъ̀jь), with medial *-ž- taken from the comparative form *tęžьjь. Further from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ting-, from Proto-Indo-European *tn̥gʰ-, zero-grade of *tengʰ-. Morphologically as *tę̑gъ, tęga̍, *tę̑go + *-ьkъ.

Direct cognates are Lithuanian tingùs (lazy) and Proto-Germanic *þunguz (Old Norse þungr (heavy)). Further cognate with Proto-Iranian *θanǰáyati.
