From Proto-Balto-Slavic *taurós, from Proto-Indo-European *táwros. Cognate with Latvian tàuras, Lithuanian taũras, Ancient Greek ταῦρος (taûros), Latin taurus, Proto-Celtic *tarwos, Proto-Germanic *þeuraz.
