Cognate with Swedish ryssja, Danish ruse, Norwegian Bokmål ruse, of uncertain origin; perhaps the s represents grammatischer Wechsel of r and the word is a jōn- stem from the root of Rohr (“reed”) (Wolfgang Pfeifer, Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Deutschen 2nd ed. 1993).
