Late 18th century. From Ukrainian and Russian Севасто́поль (Sevastópolʹ), from Greek Σεβαστόπολις (Sevastópolis) from σεβαστός (sevastós, “august”) + πόλις (pólis, “city”), probably after Empress (=Augusta) Catherine II of Russia.
