Etymology
From a merger of two interrelated forms: 1.) Stump(en), a Central and Low German variant of Stumpf, from northern Middle High German stumpe and Middle Low German stump; 2.) Stumpen, Stumpel, an Upper German variant of Stummel, from Middle High German stumbel, from Old High German stumbal. The use in standard German is predominantly based on southern dialects (word 2).
