English
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /sɪˈɹa/
Etymology
Borrowed from French syrah. The derivation from the Persian city name of Shiraz (شیراز) is today believed to be a legend. The same goes for derivations from Syria, Syracuse or the Greek island of Syros. The name might be connected to the Proto-Celtic root ser “mountain range” (compare Portuguese serra, Spanish sierra).
