Etymology

From Middle High German træne (“tears”), plural of trān m, a Central German variant of trahen, from Old High German trahan (“tear”). Doublet of Tran (“fish oil”, from Low German). Cognate with Dutch traan (“tear; fish oil”). Possibly also related with German Zähre, English tear.

      He smiled or rather wanted to smile, because suddenly he felt his lips twitching, tears rose to his eyes, and only with difficulty he could hold onto himself so as not to give a loud sob.
