From Middle High German træne (tears), plural of trān m, a Central German variant of trahen, from Old High German trahan (tear). Doublet of Tran (“fish oil”, from Low German). Cognate with Dutch traan (tear; fish oil). Possibly also related with German Zähre, English tear.
