Etymology

From Middle High German öle, ole, olei, olge, from Old High German oli, from Latin oleum, from Ancient Greek ἔλαιον (élaion). Like some of the Middle High German forms, Luxembourgish shows lack of umlaut (possibly due to continued Latin influence) and a gliding sound g (compare also Old Dutch olig).
