From Middle High German warze, Old High German warza. Cognate with Old Norse varta, Old English wearte, Dutch wrat (“to grow”), English wart, Gothic *𐍅𐌰𐍂𐍄𐍉 (*wartō).[1] From Proto-Germanic *wartǭ.
