From Medieval Latin algorithmus, a by-form of algorismus introduced under the influence of Ancient Greek ἀριθμός (arithmós, “number”). A Latinization of Arabic الخوارزمي (al-Khowārizmī, “native of Khowarizm”), surname of the Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī.
