From Ancient Greek ἀρχιεπίσκοπος (arkhiepískopos), from ἀρχι- (arkhi-, “first, chief”) + ἐπίσκοπος (epískopos, “overseer”), partly through Slavic, Old Church Slavonic архіепископъ (arxiepiskopŭ); compare Serbo-Croatian and Bulgarian архиѐпископ.
