Etymology
From Proto-Balto-Slavic *asilos. Cognate with Old Prussian asilis (“donkey”), Proto-Slavic *osьlъ (“donkey”). Ultimately a borrowing from Proto-Germanic *asiluz, itself borrowed from Latin asellus.
