From Proto-Slavic *bъdьnja, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *budin- from Medieval Latin butina (Vulgar Latin *budina) from Ancient Greek πυτίνη (putínē, “flask”),[1][2] ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰeHw- (“to swell, puff”). Cognate with Slovak debna, German Bütte.
