From Old Portuguese abesouro (“beetle”), of unknown origin. Maybe from Latin avis aurea (“golden bird”) or from Spanish abejorro, from abeja (“bee”) + -orro (“augmentative suffix”). Or, possibly imitative of the wing's sounds.
