Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bed-, *bod-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰedʰ-, *bʰodʰ-. Cognate with Latvian best (to dig, burry), Old Prussian embaddusisi (they stick), Proto-Slavic *bosti (to stab, sting), and Latin fodio (to dig).
