blèren

Dutch

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈblɛːrə(n)/
  • (file)

Etymology

From Middle Dutch bleren, from Old Dutch *blerien, from Proto-Germanic *blarjaną, probably ultimately onomatopoeic. The vowel /ɛː/ is unetymological and foreign to Dutch, but probably reinforces its onomatopoeic character.

  1. (intransitive, informal) to cry or whine loudly
