From Proto-Germanic *blīwą (“light, glad”), from Proto-Indo-European *bhlī- (“light, pleasant, nice (of weather)”). Akin to Old Frisian blī, blie "colour, hue, complexion" (North Frisian bläy "colour"), Old Saxon blī (“colour, hue, complexion”), Old English blīþe (“glad”).
