căldăraș

Romanian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /kəl.dəˈraʃ/

Etymology 1

From a derivative of Late Latin cardellus, from Latin carduelis, from carduus; the original (expected) descendant form in Romanian, *cărdel, was later suffixed with the ending -aș, and also changed due to a mistaken association with the unrelated căldare. Compare Italian cardello, cardellino, cardelletto, French chardonneret and Spanish cardelina.
