chenil

French

Etymology

From Old French, inherited from Vulgar Latin *canīle, from Latin canis (dog). Compare English kennel, which is derived ultimately from the same source but via an Anglo-Norman/Old Northern French variant which preserved the /k/ sound and hence adopted the /k/ spelling.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ʃə.nil/

Noun

chenil m (plural chenils)

  1. kennel; kennels
  2. (colloquial, figuratively) pigsty (dirty or very untidy place)
