chiper
French
Etymology
1759, "to steal, filch", probably a derivative of chippe (compare chiffe (“old cloth, rag”)) in the sense of "to hide something of little value", from Middle English chip, chippe (“fragment, worthless thing”) from Old English ċipp (“splinter, beam”) from Proto-Germanic *kippaz, *kipaz (“beam, log”). More at chip.
