From Proto-Germanic *kweþuz, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet-, *gūt- (“swelling, rounding; stomach, gut”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷu-, *gū- (“to bend, curve, bow, camber, vault, distend”). Compare German Kutteln (“tripe”) and Icelandic kviður (“stomach”).
