An haplology of Middle French contrerole, a borrowing from Medieval Latin contrarotulum (“a counter-roll or register used to verify accounts”), from Latin contra (“against, opposite”) + Latin rotulus, rotula (“roll, a little wheel”), diminutive of rota (“a wheel”).
