From Vulgar Latin *cunla, syncopated form of cūnula, diminutive of Latin cūna, cūnae (“cradle”), from Proto-Italic *koinā, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoyneh₂, derived from the root *ḱey- (“to be lying down; to settle”). Doublet of cuna.
