Derived from the same stem as the verb dalīt (“to divide, to split, to share”) (q.v.).[1]

daļa f (4th declension)

1. part (a certain amount or piece from a whole; not all, not everything)

   saule apspīd daļu istabas ― the sun shines on part of the room

   lielākā daļa klausītāju ― the majority (lit. largest part) of the audience

   daļa patiesības ― part of the truth

   pa daļai ― in part

   pa daļām ― gradually (lit. by parts)

   pa lielākai daļai ― for the most part, mainly

2. part (each of the pieces resulting from the division of a whole)

   sadalīt ēdamo vienlīdzīgās daļās ― to divide the food into equal parts

   pārdalīt laukumu vairākās daļās ― to reallocate the space into several parts

3. part, fraction (one of the equal fractions that make up a whole)

   viena ceturtā daļa, ceturtdaļa ― one fourth part, one fourth

4. part (component of a structure)
