Germanic cognates include Old Saxon dior, Dutch dier, Old High German tior (German Tier), Old Norse dýr (Icelandic dýr, Norwegian dyr, Danish dyr, Swedish djur), Gothic 𐌳𐌹𐌿𐍃 (dius). The Indo-European root also led to Lithuanian dvēsti, Latvian dvēsele, Proto-Slavic *duša (Russian душа (duša)).
