From Proto-Indo-European root *dʰēygʷ- : *dʰōygʷ- : *dʰīgʷ- (“to stick, to plant”).
Cognate with Proto-Slavic *dьgna, Proto-Germanic *dīkaz (“pool, puddle”), Latin fīgō (“pierce, pin, fasten, fix”).
