Etymology 1
From Middle Dutch *dronen. Cognate to Middle Low German dronen, Old Norse drynja, and also related to Gothic 𐌳𐍂𐌿𐌽𐌾𐌿𐍃 (drunjus). The long vowel /øː/ precludes a derivation from a hypothetical Proto-Germanic *drunjaną.
