Since 16th century; borrowed from Old French epilepsie, from Latin epilēpsia, from Ancient Greek ἐπιληψία (epilēpsía), from ἐπιλαμβάνω (epilambánō, I seize), from ἐπί (epí, upon) + λαμβάνω (lambánō, I take).
