Since 16th century; borrowed from Old French epilepsie, from Latin epilēpsia, from Ancient Greek ἐπιληψία (epilēpsía), from ἐπιλαμβάνω (epilambánō, “I seize”), from ἐπί (epí, “upon”) + λαμβάνω (lambánō, “I take”).
