Etymology
From Iranian, more specifically possibly from Alanic. Compare Ossetian ӕрзӕ́ (ærzǽ), Persian هزار (hezâr). The Iranian word is from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰéslom.[1] The Permic languages also use Iranian words for this numeral, compare сюрс (sjurs) and сюрс (sjurs).
