From Proto-Germanic *fadurjô (“paternal uncle”), from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (“father”). Akin to Old Frisian federia (“paternal uncle”), Old High German fataro, fatureo, fetiro (“paternal uncle, male cousin”) (whence German Vetter (“male cousin”).
