From Middle French, from gerbe (“sheaf”), from Old French jarbe, garbe (“sheaf, ear of grain, wreath”), from Old Frankish *garba (“sheaf”), from Proto-Germanic *garbō (“sheaf”), from Proto-Indo-European *ghrebh-, *gherbh- (“to snatch, take, rake”).
