From Proto-Germanic *garihtijaną, equivalent to ġe- + rihtan. Cognate with Old Saxon girihtian, Old Dutch girihten, Old High German girihten, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍂𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (garaihtjan).
