Etymology
From Middle French gousse, from Old French gose, gosse (“bean pod, hull, husk”), of uncertain origin. Possibly from Old Occitan gossa (“female dog, bitch”), however the sense evolution is obscure. Compare also Italian guscio (“shell, pod, husk”).
