From Proto-Germanic *grīpaną, whence also Old Saxon, Old Dutch, Old English grīpan, Old Norse grípa, Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌴𐌹𐍀𐌰𐌽 (greipan). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰreyb- (“to grasp, grab”).
