Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *gʰrebʰ- (“to scratch, dig”). Akin to Romanian groapă. Compare Old Norse grǫf (“pit, pothole, grave”), grǫptr (“graving, grave, burial, funeral”), Old Church Slavonic гробъ (grobŭ, “grave”). Alternatively related to southeastern Montenegrin dialectal form (grȍp) of Serbo-Croatian grȍb.
