From Proto-Ugric *säptɜ (“seven”), borrowed from an Indo-European language (Proto-Indo-European *septḿ̥); compare Sanskrit सप्तन् (saptán), Ancient Greek ἑπτά (heptá). Initial h- is by analogy with hat (“six”). Compare Mansi са̄т (sāt, “seven”).
