Alternative forms
- (Standard, Tosk) hënë
Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *ksandā, from pre-Albanian *skandneh₂, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- (“to shine”) (compare Welsh can (“white”), Latin candeō (“I shine, gleam”), Sanskrit चन्द्र (candrá, “shining; moon”)). One might also consider a connection to Ancient Greek ἕνος (hénos, “old”) and Latin annus (“year”).
