From Middle French hargneux, from Old French hergnos (“aggressive”), derivative of Old French hergne (“quarrel, dispute”), from hergner (“to wail, complain”), from Frankish *harmijan (“to insult, injure”), from Proto-Germanic *harmijaną (“to harm, shame, pain”), from Proto-Indo-European *pḱórmos (“shame, harm, torment, pain”), from Proto-Indo-European *pḱer-. Cognate with Old High German harmjan (“to insult, torment”), Old English hearmian (“to harm, injure”). More at harm.
