From Proto-Finnic *hepoi, cognate with Estonian hobu, Karelian hepo, Veps hepo, Livonian ibbi, Votic õpo, Votic opo. Possibly from a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos, such as Proto-Germanic *ehwaz.
