From hierro (“iron”) + -ar (without diphthong (ie) when "e" unstressed), or from Old Spanish ferrar, from a Late Latin ferrāre, from Latin ferrum (“iron”). Compare Portuguese and Catalan ferrar, French ferrer, Italian ferrare.
