From Proto-Bahnaric *kap, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *kap ~ *kaap (“to bite”); cognate with Koho kap (“to bite”), Halang kăp (“to bite”), Temiar kab (“to bite”), Pacoh cáp (“to bite”), Khasi jkep (“to bite”), jkap (“to snap”) and Vietnamese cạp.
