Etymology 1
From earlier *kahleh, cognate with Karelian kahleh (“shackle, burden”), Ingrian kahle (“shackle, chain”). Proposed to be either a further development of etymology 2,[1] or derived from Germanic (compare haahla (“trammel hook”) from Proto-Germanic *hanhlō)[2].

From kahlata (“to wade”) + -e. Cognates include dialectal Estonian kahle (“attachment point for a rope in a seine”), perhaps Livonian kōļ (“strap”).
