Etymology

Originally ‘hut’, compound of ka ‘out, from’ and tund ‘to shake, dangle’, a calque of Slavic *kolyba ‘hut’, folk-etymologized from *kolybati ‘to shake’.[1] Another explanation suggests a borrowing from Italian cantone (region).[2]
