Etymology
The first element is derived from king and the second from rik (“kingdom, realm”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rīkiją (“kingdom, realm”), cf. Old Norse ríki, Old English rīce. Compare also Dutch koninkrijk, German Königreich, Danish kongerige.
