kvassi
Finnish
Etymology
From Russian ква́с (kvás, “kvass”), from Old East Slavic квасъ (kvasŭ), from Proto-Slavic *kvasъ.
Noun
kvassi
- kvass (traditional fermented Russian and Ukrainian beverage with little or no alcohol, usually made from bread)
Usage notes
Kvassi resembles very closely a traditional Finnish beverage called kalja or kotikalja, the main difference being that kvassi is made of bread whereas kalja is made of malt. Therefore also the Russian kvass is probably more often called kalja than kvassi in Finnish.
