kynttilä
Finnish
Etymology
From Proto-Norse [script needed] (*kundila) (or from Old Swedish kyndil (“candle, torch”)). Cognate to Estonian küünal, Old Swedish kyndil (“candle, torch”), Votic tšüntteli, Ingrian küntteli. Compare Faroese kyndil (“lantern”) and Icelandic kyndill (“torch”), ultimately from Latin candela, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kand- (“to shine, glow”).
