From Proto-Indo-European *lemesi-o-, a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *lem 'to break'. Cognate to Lithuanian lemesis (sharp edge of the plough), Proto-Slavic *lemeš 'ploughshare'[1]. Related to lëmë.
