From Proto-Uralic *lüppe (“butterfly”). Cognates include Southern Mansi läpäχ, Sosva Mansi ла̄панты (lāpanti, “butterfly”), Finnish liippo (“butterfly”), and Eastern Mari лыве (ləve, “butterfly”).[1]
