Probably from Frankish *lisa (“rut, furrow, track”), from Proto-Germanic *lisō, *laistiz, *laista-, *laisō (“track, trace”), from Proto-Indo-European *leyəs- (“furrow, track”), related to Old High German lesa (“wrinkle, line”), Old English lāst (“footstep, track, trace”), Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 (laists, “track, trace”). Possibly influenced by Frankish *lista (“border, edge”), see liste, last.
